Boiler Lockouts — What To Do

Lockouts can be caused by ignition faults, low system pressure, frozen condensate pipes, blocked filters, sensor failures or overheating. Your boiler displays a fault code to help identify the category.

Resetting once after a temporary fault may be fine — repeated lockouts need professional diagnosis. Do not repeatedly reset without understanding the cause, as this can mask a safety issue.

Check system pressure and repressurise if low, following manufacturer instructions. In freezing weather, inspect the external condensate pipe for ice — gentle warm water can thaw a frozen section.

Ensure the gas, oil or LPG supply is on, the thermostat is calling for heat and the programmer is set correctly. Note any fault code displayed — this helps our engineer prepare for your visit.

Frozen condensate pipes are one of the most common winter lockout causes on modern condensing boilers. Insulating exposed pipework and maintaining a fall to the drain reduces recurrence.
