Installation, servicing & repairs
Gas cooker installation covers freestanding and built-in models — correct bayonet or isolation fittings, supply pressure checked and safe combustion confirmed before handover. Gas hob installation includes secure fixing, the correct flexible connection or hard pipework, isolation valve provision and a full gas safety check, coordinated with kitchen fitters when cut-outs and extraction need to be ready first. Gas oven installation follows manufacturer clearances, isolation and connection methods so heat, ventilation and gas supply stay safe in enclosed cabinets.
We also handle disconnection and reconnection for kitchen refits, plus fault finding when burners, ignition, thermostats or valves fail. Annual servicing includes burner cleaning, ignition checks, flame picture assessment and a gas tightness test — with clear advice when repair or replacement is the safer option. Many customers combine kitchen appliance servicing with a boiler service, allowing both checks on the same visit.
Typical service: 45–90 minutes · Typical installation or reconnection: 1–3 hours (hob installs often 1–2 hours)

Gas Appliance Safety
The same safety fundamentals apply to every gas appliance on this page — from a kitchen hob to a warehouse heater.
Gas leaks
If you smell gas, turn the appliance off at its isolation valve, avoid switches and naked flames, ventilate the space and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Yellow or lazy flames
Healthy burners produce a crisp blue flame. Yellow tipping, soot staining or delayed ignition points to incomplete combustion — stop using the appliance and book a Gas Safe inspection.
Carbon monoxide
Fit audible CO alarms in every room with a gas appliance — especially open-flued fires and water heaters — and test them regularly.
Ventilation and flues
Never block air vents, air bricks, cabinet ventilation or flue terminals. Open-flued appliances rely on room ventilation to burn safely.
When to stop using an appliance
Stop and isolate any appliance with unstable flames, fumes, flue staining, or repeated overheat trips and lockouts. Do not keep resetting commercial heaters that lock out.
No DIY gas work
DIY gas connection or repair is illegal and dangerous. Domestic and commercial gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the correct competencies.
Gas Safe advice
Check your engineer’s Gas Safe ID card, keep service records accessible, know where isolation valves are, and service every gas appliance on schedule.

Gas Appliance Guidance
Practical advice to help homeowners and facilities teams decide when to service, repair or replace gas appliances.
Which Gas Appliances Require Servicing?
Any gas appliance that burns fuel should be checked regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer:
- Boilers and gas fires — typically annually
- Cookers, hobs and ovens — at least annually
- Gas water heaters — annually, especially in hard water areas
- Commercial warm air, radiant, cabinet and tube heaters — on a planned schedule
- Any appliance covered by landlord or workplace gas safety duties
When Replacement Is Better Than Repair
Repair is often right first — but replacement can be safer when:
- Parts are obsolete or repeatedly failing
- The heat exchanger or combustion chamber is corroded
- The appliance cannot meet current safety or flue standards
- A kitchen or commercial refit makes a new appliance logical
Domestic vs Commercial Gas Appliances
Domestic and commercial gas work share Gas Safe fundamentals, but commercial plant often needs additional competencies and documentation:
- Domestic work covers cookers, fires, boilers and water heaters in homes
- Commercial work covers warm air, radiant, cabinet and tube heaters plus site plant
- Facilities teams typically need written service records for compliance
- Commercial visits are planned around business hours and downtime
- APS supports both homeowners and commercial clients across Berkshire

Cookers, hobs, ovens, fires and water heaters all need a Gas Safe engineer — not a general handyman. APS installs, services and repairs domestic and commercial gas appliances across Berkshire, including warm-air and radiant heaters, with the certification that keeps the job legal.
