Across Hungerford, Lambourn, Kintbury, Kingsclere, Newbury and the Berkshire Downs, many homes still rely on oil heating. Fuel is stored in a tank on site and delivered by tanker — so the boiler, burner and oil supply all have to work together.

That is why oil systems behave differently from mains gas. Nozzle wear, flue draught, combustion settings and fuel quality all affect reliability. Use this guide to understand the boiler and the fuel system around it; when you need an engineer, see oil boiler servicing, oil boiler repairs or oil boiler installation.

Oil heating is also common around Hermitage, Highclere, Tadley, Mortimer and neighbouring villages where mains gas is unavailable. Oil tank installation stays on its own service page, separate from boiler work.

Oil Heating for Off-Grid Berkshire Homes

Across Hungerford, Lambourn, Kintbury, Kingsclere and the Berkshire Downs, many homes store kerosene on site and heat with a pressure-jet oil boiler. The tank, supply line, fire valve and burner all have to work together — so oil diagnosis needs an OFTEC-registered approach, not a gas-only one.

APS are Grant Accredited Installers and OFTEC-registered engineers. Familiar local plant includes Grant Vortex, Firebird, Warmflow, Worcester Bosch, Hounsfield and Trianco boilers — often with Riello burners — and oil systems are frequently paired with a separate oil tank or an oil-fired AGA/Rayburn.

Oil leaks, lines, filters and Tigerloops

Many oil breakdowns sit outside the boiler casing. Restricted supply lines, clogged filters, a sticking fire valve, air in the line after a run-dry, or a Tigerloop / de-aerator that is not feeding cleanly can starve the burner just as surely as a failed photocell.

APS OFTEC engineers trace leaks, staining and unexplained oil smells from the tank fittings through to the burner inlet, then explain clearly whether the next step is a fuel-system repair, an oil boiler service, or replacement. Tank surveys and bunded replacements stay on the dedicated oil tank installation page.

From oil tank to radiators

Think of oil heating as a chain: a bunded oil tank, the supply line, a fire valve, the pressure-jet burner, the heat exchanger, then the pump and radiators. If one link is weak, the whole system suffers — so diagnosis should cover the system, not just the boiler casing.

Related topics include oil boiler installation, oil tank installation, AGA & Rayburn appliances and larger commercial heating plant. Read this guide first, then open the service page that matches the work you need.

How Oil Boilers Work

Kerosene is drawn from the oil tank, cleaned through a filter, then sprayed as a fine mist by a pressure-jet burner — often a Riello unit. That mist ignites, heats a metal heat exchanger, and warms the water that flows to your radiators or hot water cylinder. Exhaust gases leave through a flue designed for oil appliances.

Most Berkshire homes use a system or regular (heat-only) oil boiler indoors. Where space is tight, an external oil boiler — such as a Grant Vortex outdoor model — or a small boiler house is a common alternative. Commercial oil plant follows the same principles, just at a larger scale.

  1. 1Oil is stored in a compliant tank, with bunding where required
  2. 2The supply line and filters feed the burner
  3. 3The pressure-jet burner atomises and ignites the fuel
  4. 4The heat exchanger warms system water
  5. 5The flue and controls manage safe, comfortable operation

Oil heating for rural and off-grid properties

  • Rural and off-grid homes without mains gas
  • Villages and farms around Hungerford, Lambourn, Kintbury, Kingsclere and the Berkshire Downs
  • Properties with an external oil boiler or dedicated boiler room
  • Commercial premises with oil-fired heating plant
  • Homes that also run an oil-fired AGA or Rayburn

Why oil boilers remain popular in Berkshire

Advantages

  • Reliable heat where there is no gas main
  • Strong output for larger or older properties when the boiler is sized correctly
  • You control fuel deliveries rather than relying on a network connection
  • Works with most existing radiator systems after a suitable replacement
  • A proven choice for rural homes and commercial buildings across Berkshire

Disadvantages

  • You need space for a compliant oil tank and safe tanker access
  • Annual OFTEC servicing and basic tank checks are essential
  • Tank condition and spill risk need ongoing attention
  • Poor burner setup wastes fuel and creates soot — combustion must be set correctly

Efficiency and lifespan

A modern oil boiler only runs efficiently when combustion is set up properly. Clean nozzles, the right pump pressure and a suitable flue matter as much as the brochure rating — which is why OFTEC servicing and Grant Accredited commissioning make a real difference.

Sludge in radiators and outdated controls waste heat too. Sometimes a system clean or better controls are worth considering alongside a repair or upgrade.

With regular OFTEC servicing, many oil boilers last around 15 years or more. Outdoor boilers and exposed sites often age faster. Oil tanks have their own lifespan and inspection needs, separate from the boiler.

Repair or replace?

Plenty of breakdowns are repairable: a worn nozzle, failed photocell, dirty filter, air in the line after the tank ran dry, or a sticking fire valve. An OFTEC engineer can usually restore heat without replacing the whole boiler.

Replacement makes more sense when the heat exchanger is failing, combustion stays poor despite correct setup, parts are obsolete, or an ageing outdoor boiler is no longer reliable. Common paths include a Grant Vortex oil boiler, or a heat pump where it suits the property — see our Newbury oil-to-heat-pump project for an example of that journey.

Safety considerations

Oil boilers and tanks should be installed and maintained to current regulations and OFTEC good practice — the standard OFTEC-registered engineers work to on domestic and commercial plant across Berkshire.

Keep the tank secure, vents clear and the delivery route accessible. If you smell oil or see staining around the tank, get it checked promptly.

Do not adjust burner settings yourself. Incorrect combustion can produce soot, waste fuel and create unsafe operation.

Common oil boiler brands in Berkshire

APS regularly services and repairs the leading brands fitted across Berkshire. Availability of parts and exact model support is confirmed on survey or diagnosis.

  • Grant (including Grant Vortex)
  • Firebird
  • Warmflow
  • Worcester Bosch (oil ranges)
  • Hounsfield
  • Trianco
  • Other oil boilers commonly found on Berkshire surveys

Signs a service or repair may be needed

  • Repeated lockouts or heavy sooting
  • An oil smell near the boiler or tank
  • Using more oil without a clear weather reason
  • Tank corrosion, weeping fittings or gauge faults
  • No heating after a delivery or filter change
  • Annual OFTEC service overdue
  • Commercial plant running poorly or locking out often

Oil boiler questions we are asked most often

Do I need an OFTEC engineer for an oil boiler?

Yes. Servicing, combustion setup, commissioning and related oil heating work should be carried out by OFTEC-registered technicians. Oil tank installation and replacement sit on a separate dedicated page from boiler work.

Is oil heating common in rural Berkshire?

Yes. Off-grid oil heating is widespread across Hungerford, Lambourn, Kintbury, Kingsclere, Newbury, Hermitage, Highclere and villages throughout west Berkshire where mains gas is unavailable.

What does Grant Accredited mean for oil boilers?

Grant Accredited Installers supply and install Grant Vortex and other Grant oil boilers to manufacturer standards. OFTEC work on Firebird, Warmflow, Worcester Bosch, Hounsfield, Trianco and other major brands follows the same combustion and safety discipline.

Which oil heating brands are common locally?

Grant, Firebird, Warmflow, Worcester Bosch, Hounsfield and Trianco systems are all common on Berkshire surveys, including pressure-jet burners such as Riello units.

How is an oil boiler different from a gas boiler?

Oil is stored on site as kerosene and burnt through a pressure-jet burner. Gas arrives via the mains. Oil systems also need a tank, supply line and filters — responsibilities gas homes do not have.

Where do I find oil tank installation information?

Tank surveys, replacements and bunded upgrades are covered on our Oil Tank Installation page — kept separate from oil boiler servicing, repairs and installation.

Do oil-fired AGA and Rayburn appliances need specialist care?

Yes. Oil-fired range cookers need specialist servicing — details are on our Aga & Rayburn page.

How often should an oil boiler be serviced?

Once a year by an OFTEC-registered engineer. Regular servicing keeps combustion safe and efficient, supports warranties and reduces the chance of a cold-weather lockout. Arrange oil boiler servicing on our Boiler Servicing page.

Does the same OFTEC approach apply to commercial oil heating?

Yes. The same OFTEC discipline applies to commercial oil-fired plant — combustion, safety and planned maintenance at a larger scale. System-level commercial heating work sits on our commercial heating page.
